Unlike the original you only maintain one main base, but you can set up interceptor and satellite coverage around the world. This research in turn can be used to create new weapons and equipment, and any excess sold off on the black market to help offset your monthly costs. Injured soldiers can be out of service for weeks, so maintaining your base involves ensuring you have a steady supply and that you’re always researching the aliens and their tech that you capture/kill/destroy when out in the field. (Although disappointingly it’s not a very reactive one and doesn’t seem to change depending on how many people you employ or who’s actually supposed to be in, for example, the infirmary.) Rather than the boring overhead plan of the original your base is represented as a kind of human ant farm, with different rooms housing research, engineering, power plants, conference rooms, and so on.
